An established and respected summer camp in New Hampshire for children from ages 7- 18 years of age, Camp Wa-Klo’s highest priority is the safety of the children in the hands of their Camp Counselors, therefore each Counselor was required to have a full CRB check and two interviews before admission. On arrival at the camp, each Counselor would be assigned a cabin which typically held up to 8 children, and this would be their sole responsibility 24 hours a day. This was a separate responsibility to the daily teaching assignments. It was also vital that staff members adapted quickly to their new role and living situation in order to be successful in the job. Cabin Responsibilities: • Waking up the children at 7/ 7:15am. • Overseeing breakfast, lunch, and dinner on tables of 10 children. • Making sure your cabin of children had punctual attendance. • Managing potentially inappropriate conversations between the children. • Diffusing potential arguments, bullying or gossiping between the children. • Helping them with any lesson or activity requirements. • Overseeing the health and wellbeing of the children and taking appropriate action if any of them were sick. • Engaging with the children at all times whilst still retaining authority. • Making sure they were in bed before 9.30pm. Teaching Responsibilities: • Being aware and focused at all times whilst the children were handling the horses. • Communicating effectively across a large space and to multiple children. • Adjusting your communication methods for different ages (from 7-15.) • Ensuring promptness and efficiency between lessons. • Giving plenty of praise and encouragement to ensure progress in a difficult sport. • Allocating the children suitably to each horse without overusing horses. • Ensuring correct uniform. • Making lesson plans at the end of each day. • Allocating children to different instructors according to ability and progress. • Putting safety before anything else.
