I've had the pleasure of working with Ruben and four of his peers. They took on the challenge of coming up with an NLP based solution to an ill-defined problem. They did an amazing job of analyzing the problem, refining the problem/solution space and designing and implementing a solution. To do this they had to familiarize themselves in a short time with different techniques, such as clustering, transformers and question answering in order to implement a functional proof-of-concept. Which they did in a professional and efficient manner. The end result was a complex pipeline with an functional proof-of-concept.

In this position I have helped build 5+ dashboards and helped managers with data requests and business insights in both category management (e.g. what products to focus on selling, which can we leave behind) and supply & inventory management (e.g. product purchase forecasts). In this role I have learnt a great deal about how a business operates, how managers take decisions, the best way to team build, as well as having toned my SQL, excel and dashboard making skills. In the thesis titled; 'Text Classification of Customer Support Exchanges with NLP and ML for Automated Error Labelling' I compared and applied multiple text classification methods in order to solve a real business problem for Zeiss. My work was well received by both Zeiss and my examiners (and yielded an 8.5/10). Skills developed: general data science skills (python, azure, etc), team play, independent working. A voluntary internship organised outside of my university for hands on experience. Living alone in Munich, I helped Zeiss develop a patent trend analysis dashboard. That is, a dashboard that allows one to see or search for trends within a certain group of patents. The patents were automatically cleaned, analysed and clustered using Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning techniques. I worked alone using mostly Python and machine learning libraries, Plotly, Dash, Docker, Patbase and Azure cloud services. The dashboard was completely functional online and each step was completed in the cloud. You could re-cluster the patents on the dashboard using different techniques and they would be computed live. You could then proceed to look at the top 5 inventors for example. Or perhaps highlight the expired patents. I presented the dashboard to the interested parties within Zeiss before I left. People involved in R&D, Patent managent and Technology strategy attended. A vital learning experience on what it could be like to work for such a big company and specifically in my area of study. Business Analyst and Customer Support Agent
-
Sep 2020 - Oct 2020
Skills developed: leadership, customer service, team play, resourcefulness & IT skills. I started out as a Customer Support Agent for the French team. Within a week I had seen an opportunity in the Operations department as they were keen on upgrading their management tools. I developed and proposed a business strategy and action plan to help Operations become more data efficient. Within two weeks of arriving, I had secured my second role: Business Analyst. For almost two months I researched, planned and implemented several systems to help management. There were weekly meetings with the Operations manager and the two co-owners of the company. Show less

Skills developed: stress control, emergency response, team playing & empathy Tasked with spotting refugees crossing the Turkish/European border on the North coast of Lesbos, Greece. Once spotted, we would rescue and welcome them. We nursed the injured and gave out life essentials such as water, food and dry clothes. Plenty of teamwork and stress testing work. Brilliant experience overall. Skills developed: teaching, communication, team playing & leadership. For three summers (2013-2015) I participated in a volunteer program designed to help Spanish teens of all ages learn English. It was an immersive experience where fluent English speakers are mixed with a similar amount of Spaniards in a complex in Spain. Spaniards learnt from us with group activities and one-on-one teaching. Skills developed: teaching, communication, team playing & leadership.
