Courses designed and taught:• Doing good? Anthropological perspectives on humanitarianism (Term 2, Block 5/6, 2017)In this final year thematic module we discussed critical studies of humanitarian interventions and we focused on key analytical concepts and theories. Through several ethnographic cases we explored the historical and cultural contexts of humanitarian activities. Where does the imperative to “do good” come from? How are such interventions grounded on ethical and political understandings? How does humanitarianism construct its subject? What are the dilemmas humanitarian workers encounter and how do they deal with them? Apart from academic articles and books we discussed texts written by humanitarian practitioners, volunteers and journalists. In the class we studied the power of humanitarian images and narratives through a mini photo exhibition based on the students’ selections.• Anthropology of the Mediterranean (Term 1, Block 1, 2016, 2017)The course offered a critical reading of classical anthropological studies of the Mediterranean and a refreshed contemporary insight in the study of the region. We discussed the traditional themes of honour and shame, patronage and political practices, and hospitality but also modernities, conflicts, borders, migration and recent crises. The objective of the course was to acquaint students with the complexity and the richness of the Mediterranean through the study of diverse cultures/societies. Moreover, students were able to historically contextualize the construction of the Mediterranean as an object of comparative study. They became aware of processes of reification and exoticization. The class promoted the attentive reading of the texts, critical analytic and writing skills and expanded students’ oral presentation skills. Show less

I am currently (2014-2018) a research fellow at the University of Amsterdam, Department of Anthropology. I take part in the ERC-funded Research Project "The Social Life of State Deportation Regimes: A Comparative Study of the Implementation Interface". The project is a comparative study of the treatment of irregular migrants and failed asylum-seekers in seven different countries worldwide: Belgium, Ecuador, Greece, Indonesia, Israel, the Netherlands and Spain. It seeks to explore and question the everyday realities of what scholars have depicted as the "deportation turn" in the 21st century. In particular, the project focuses on the meso level of deportation regimes: the interface of street-level state agents and civil-society actors in shaping practices of deportation. My research takes place in Greece and seeks to bring to the fore the viewpoints of people actively involved in initiatives and practices related to migrant detention and deportation. Show less
