Bio
Josh Gardiner
I've been both a colleague and peer of Royce for over a decade and know him to be a calm, thoughtful Creative working in service of effectiveness and the unexpected. We've worked on so many projects (and left so much on the cutting room floor) where he's proven his understanding of storytelling (people) and entertainment (fun). I'm grateful for his mentorship in our time as a creative team, and for his support in both my ongoing Communications work and personal development/successes (if I may). In particular, I would note 'The Incarceration Issue' from 2015. Despite some concern that he might not be able to do the project justice, Royce stepped up to an enormous challenge on this very special VICE project - the biggest one we had yet to tackle in Australia & New Zealand - building the right team for the job and steering the ship ably. The multi-platform exploration of the indigenous experience of the penal system in Australia was investigative, surprising and impactful, being featured across Festival of Dangerous Ideas, The Guardian, ABC TV, Amnesty International, NITV and more. And meaningful to the communities we made it with, and for. Royce has grown with the VICE business, across Asia Pacific and as a regional leader; speaking on stages about ideas and audiences, and bringing up a new generation of talent within his team. Intuitive and genuinely interested in giving voice to those on the margins, Royce gets people (not just "audiences") good.

Working alongside Royce was always a pleasure because of the exciting and innovative way his mind works. He has a seemingly unlimited ability to dream up and execute exciting content and projects. And is unique in his ability to re-imagine and deliver familiar themes and messages in fresh ways. I always found it energising to see him balance established brand identities alongside the ideas and content that young people genuinely care about and connect to. He's not afraid to challenge the familiar and push to create something truly original. That is a tightrope I genuinely don't think many people can walk as elegantly as him.
