Shaw Trust is a national charity dedicated to creating brighter futures for the people and communities it serves. It does this by delivering employment, education, skills, health and wellbeing services to young people and adults across the UK. Shaw Trust’s ambition is to transform the lives of over 1 million people per year from 2022 - by increasing the scale and impact of Shaw Trust’s work. Recently this has led to Ixion and Prospects joining the newly formed Shaw Trust Group which includes the Disabled Living Foundation, Forth Sector, Shaw Education Trust and CDG-Wise Ability. The diversity of the Group has increased meaning Shaw Trust is at the stage where it is able to support clients at almost any stage of their lives. The annual group turnover is £250m, which places Shaw Trust in the top 25 charities in the UK by income.

Shaw Trust and CDG are involved in merger discussions with due diligence underway. Until the due diligence exercise is completed the outcome of the merger discussions cannot be prejudged. However, best practice suggests that having a designated individual to be the lead proactively on issues raised during this process is reassuring to staff and of value to trustees. Consequently, the Chief Executive of CDG has been assigned this remit.

About Careers Development GroupCDG is a registered charity with a turnover last year of nearly £30m. We compete commercially against some of the world's largest welfare to work organisations and reinvest our net profits into the communities for which we provide services. As part of our commitment to providing public benefit we are also leading a national Expert Volunteer Initiative to recruit 50,000 volunteers to work with unemployed people across the UK in an effort to reduce long term unemployment. Many of the people CDG supports have multiple barriers to employment including a lack of recent work experience, disabilities, health problems and a lack of relevant employability skills. CDG supported over 30,000 people in their journey back into work during 2009/10 and works across 26 centres in the UK (London, the South East, the Isle of Wight and the East Midlands), employing over 350 people. We operated New Deal contracts as a prime provider and Flexible New Deal contracts as a subcontractor in addition to Skills Funding Agency and European Social Fund contracts. In partnership with WISE Employment, CDG is a Work Choice prime provider in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, responsible for delivering employment support to people with disabilities. The charity also works internationally and has formed an organisation based in Australia in partnership with BEST Community Development, a leading third sector welfare to work organisation in that country. In alliance with international welfare to work provider MAXIMUS, CDG is a framework provider for the Work Programme in seven of England’s nine regions and also separately is a framework provider in London. CDG won a Work Programme Prime contract in East London and in West London and BBOH as part of the alliance with Maximus.
