The primary aim of my study is to understand and elucidate the long-term effects of neonatal procedural pain in preterms, and its underlying anatomical, cellular and molecular mechanisms in a translational research setting. Based on these insights, we aim to further optimize pharmacotherapy for NICU patients, and evaluate possible new targets for this vulnerable patient population, with a specific interest in the serotonergic system. This research is conducted in the laboratory of Professor Dr. Joosten. Neonatal procedural pain is a common occurance for neonates admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), as part of their life-saving care. If neonatal pain is not treated adequately, it can cause long-term harm. From a preclinical perspective, one can gain more insighst into normal and abnormal neurodevelopment, and the anatomical and functional changes that underly long-term negative outcomes observed in preterm born children. Preclinical research can also aid the development or repurposing of pharmacological treatment for the vulnerable population of neonates and children. Show less

In a collaboration with the Erasmus MC Sophia's Childrens hospital, we aim to adapt our preclinical research based on clinical needs of the vulnerable patient population of neonates and children. This collaboration is together with Prof. Dr. Tibboel and Dr. Simons. In 2018 I was involved with preclinical research into the fysiological properties of pain for the Hospital of Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. SickKids, a world leader in child health, aims to improve health of children through integration of care, research and education. This research was conducted at the Prescott Lab of Professor Dr. Prescott. For my thesis, we aimed to development an optogenetic rat model to elucidate the mechanistic underpinnings of mechanical allodynia, combining electrophysiology with optogenetics in a translational pain research setting. In 2017 I was involved with preclinical research into the long-term effects of repetitive neonatal procedural pain on the opioid system within the brainstem, using a clinically relevant rat model of repetitive needle-pricking. This research was part of the department of Anesthesiology in the laboratory of Professor Dr. Joosten. During my bachelor psychology, I was a research assistent at the Department of Medical and Clinical Psychology and the Center of Research on Psychological and Somatic disorders (CoRPS). Within this clinical project 'Whose diabetes is it anyway?', the transfer of diabetes care responsibilities from parents to children with type I Diabetes Mellitus were investigated.
