I had the privilege of teaching English and Spanish to Afghan refugees in Mexico City, as well as refugees from other Caribbean countries. Through my work, I not only taught them practical language skills, but also provided them with the necessary tools to express their needs, wants, fears, and experiences. Collaborating with other psychologists and well-being officers, I sought to make the transition to a new life in a new country as easy as possible for my students. I learned about their cultures and backgrounds, and ensured that I not only taught them language skills that would be useful in their new lives, but also provided a space for them to express their heritage and share what was important to them. My commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment, combined with my expertise in language teaching, enabled me to connect with my students and help them navigate the challenges of adapting to a new culture.
