Alongside studying for my Graduate Diploma in Law, I worked as a Corporate paralegal. I was the sole assistance to the Corporate team and worked on a variety of matters within that team, as well as maintaining my own caseload of claims work. In my role as Corporate Paralegal, my primary duties and responsibilities are as follows: • Assisting with acquisitions, disposals and re-organisations of a range of financial advisory businesses, varying in scope and complexity • Responsible for maintaining document check lists, as well as drafting and managing ancillary documents necessary for the transaction/matter • Liaising with clients to answer queries, respond to information requests and give updates on the progress of their matter Aside from my Corporate work, I also was required to progress a number of financials services regulatory claims regarding a range of defaulted investments. I was responsible for ensuring that those claims were properly analysed, prepared and submitted to the relevant body, as well as managing the claim while it was being considered. I worked as part of a team that was responsible for the claims of over 450 clients to the Financial Ombudsman Service and Financial Services Compensation Scheme. It was my role to ensure that the project was in good administrative order, in addition to acting as a claims handler and point of contact for these clients. Show less

Administrative Assistant

Aug 2016 - Nov 2016
My role at Taxassist was developing and changing all the time as I grew more confident and knowledgable about the business and the sector. Initially, my responsibility was largely administrative so my tasks typically included reviewing the practice database to ensure that client information was accurate and up-to-date. I then had to ensure that steps were taken to gather the missing information or documents so that our records were complete. In particular, my responsibility was to ensure that our practice complied with money laundering regulations and the client files were in organised and up-to-date. However, I have been given accountancy work, such as the filling out of Self-Assessment tax returns and the analysis of Limited Company accounts. I have really enjoyed this kind of work and it has encouraged me to be analytical and pay close attention to detail. Show less

I spent a week at this law firm but I had a variety of different experiences in that time which gave me insight into different areas of law. Every day, I was placed in a different department of the firm. These departments were: Business Insolvency, Property Litigation, Corporate and Commercial Litigation. My role for the day in each department varied, for example in Business Insolvency I was given research tasks to complete on queries that had come from clients. The answers that I produced were then forwarded to the clients after being reviewed by a partner. In other departments, they had prepared a set of mock scenarios for me to complete which simulated the sort of tasks a lawyer might be expected to complete for a small business. They were largely Company Secretarial tasks and ensuring that events of the imaginary business were consolidated in line with the statutory requirements, for example, the completion of stock transfer forms for the scenario where shares changed hands. I found this a really useful experience because I learned about how companies are set up, structured and the laws they have the comply with. My experience also included tasks that involved reading of material from past cases and analysing strength of the arguments presented. I wasn’t given the outcome of the case with the documents so I was asked to draw judgements on what I thought the outcome would be from the case and the information I was given. This improved by ability to make judgements on the strength and weaknesses of arguments, draw conclusions from information and then justify those conclusions with information. Show less
