My experimental thesis in English was written during my Erasmus laboratory period in the University of Eastern Finland(Kuopio), where I carried out some calibration attempts on an electronic nose, Chempro100i, based on IMS (Ion mobility spectrometry) technology that emulates the mammalian olfactory apparatus. The IMS capabilities have already been successfully employed for microbial (volatile organic compounds) VOC´s identification, food quality freshness assessment and control of yeast fermentation, but in the clinical application it is still in its “embryonal” stage and greater efforts are needed. Therefore ,the main purpose of my study was to get more knowledge about the working principles of Chempro100i in the detection of volatile compounds released from a vapour generator that works like an artificial lung. In the future it could be used as routine diagnostic instrument ,instead then invasive way as blood analysis and biopsy, for gastrointestinal diseases or just to assess the fasting or postprandial state. The signal and the chemical spectrum of the exhaled breath biomarkers will create a specific “smell fingerprint” in the e-nose that might become even a new generation device in the nutritional research.
