I’ve known Rory since his Dexion days, when I was running a fund, and we were talking to them about it. We got on really well, and more than kept in touch as friends; and at various points, I have done consulting work with Hilltop. Rory has got an amazing set of qualities and skills. Everything from being a great communicator who you can just chat to, to being able to take a deep dive into the detail, because his experience of alternatives is extremely good from all sorts of perspectives. I’m really impressed by what Rory has achieved at Hilltop. Business is never easy, and that is never more true than in investing over the last few years. His vision, energy and stamina have been hugely impressive.

Rory is an experienced alternatives professional who I’ve found to be a bright and thoughtful investor. He has distinguished himself by his ability and willingness to clearly articulate the drivers and risks of his investment strategy providing the basis for constructive conversations about strategies and managers. His transparent and direct communication style sets clear expectations for investors, a defined path for his team, and useful guidelines as to which fund strategies might be an appropriate fit.

Founded in 2010, Hilltop pursued a strategy focused on delivering a truly idiosyncratic, non-correlated return profile. To do so the company focused on strategies which, themselves, targeted low, no or negative correlation. Whilst Hilltop’s mandate precluded us from investing in mangers which exhibit anything more than slight positive correlation, our core skill was identifying managers with a genuine, analysable edge, opportunity set or source of differentiation. Such managers are in a minority with far too many so-called hedge funds heavily (and perpetually) long biased but charging higher fees than long only managers. The Hilltop Core Select Fund delivered positive returns in seven out of eight years with sub 3% volatility and no correlation to equity markets. Whilst not an ‘emerging manager’ fund, Hilltop was happy to back emerging talent and had an excellent track record of doing so: Metacapital, Deer Park, Kestrel, Barak, CCI Tech, Northlander and Spruce Point were all managers backed when they had sub $50m under management and which went to build very successful businesses. Ultimately, Hilltop could not achieve the scale of AUM required to run a properly resourced business and a decision was taken in August 2018 to return capital to investors. Show less

Recruited as Dexion’s first employee with responsibility for promoting single manager hedge funds to investors. Played a pivotal role in Dexion’s development into highly successful boutique investment bank focused on hedge funds and other alternative investments. During my time in this role, I performed the following tasks: • Sourced, researched and selected hedge funds to represent, all of which performed strongly post selection. • Set up and managed Dexion’s fledgling local office in Guernsey. • Orchestrated single manager sales team expansion from solo effort initially to five specialists • Personally raised over USD1bn into hedge funds during time at the firm. • Perfect hit rate in the GFC with all nine funds (run by six managers) selected for representation by Dexion, delivering positive returns in the core crisis period of Jul-07 through Feb-09.
