It is an opportunity for me to learn, to play, explore and experiment and contribute to the growth of the organisation and the institution. Sumedhas holds a unique position in the field of personal growth and community building of amateurs and professionals from various sectors including children and the youth. At a time when even voluntary sector has become professionalised, it is one of the few institutions in the country today that is run entirely voluntarily with more than 100 members enlivening the organisation and the institutional space delving into existential questions of Identities - of individual - psychological, social and cultural, organisations and communities. I have succeeded the role from colleagues who are stalwarts in the industry and in various sectors of work. Working in Sumedhas is about learning what it means to govern a voluntary organisation in the true sense of the word, where members offer and receive without financial transactions. It means learning how to enliven the spirit of exploration and discovery without necessarily getting caught in predicting outcomes and impact. It means testing one's convictions, integrity and trust in the principle that human connections are inherent and hold potential for individual and collective change and offers of fostering and nurturing that connection cannot be measured in metrics of the marketplace alone. In my stint in the organisation over 4 years, I worked with rural areas of Bengal with pilot interventions to resist trafficking, in shelters with survivors framing advocacy issues and with women in prostitution on their civic and economic rights.
