Roop is most often the smartest person in the room... I’ve known him for two decades now and he is a genuinely a super sharp professional. Not just his head - but he also has his heart in the right place. His understanding of human deprivation and his efforts towards inclusive development never fail to inspire me. I don’t get to work with me very often - but always look forward to opportunities of such kind. Over the years I’ve learnt a lot from him. I wish him the very best for all his future endeavours.

I have known Roop for more than a decade now; though we have only worked together for around 3 years therein. Suffice to say that I have really enjoyed working with him on the occasions that I have – he brings so much of himself to any space (intellectually, emotionally) that the person on the other side has to engage, invest and involve most of herself as well. I remember a particular conversation we had only months into me knowing him at work – I was on the verge of leaving because I felt that I couldn’t do justice to my role because of medical reasons. Roop sat me down and asked me whether I had made up my mind between academia and activism. And that if I had chosen the latter, the organisation would make a space for me regardless of such constraints. At that point when I felt like giving up on myself due to sundry reasons, it helped to know that someone who had only known me a few months, would make me feel like I belonged somewhere. That is something I will carry with me always. And remember to offer anybody who comes to me looking for a space to be. This is quintessential Roop and the impact he left on all those who knew him.

It is an opportunity for me to learn, to play, explore and experiment and contribute to the growth of the organisation and the institution. Sumedhas holds a unique position in the field of personal growth and community building of amateurs and professionals from various sectors including children and the youth. At a time when even voluntary sector has become professionalised, it is one of the few institutions in the country today that is run entirely voluntarily with more than 100 members enlivening the organisation and the institutional space delving into existential questions of Identities - of individual - psychological, social and cultural, organisations and communities. I have succeeded the role from colleagues who are stalwarts in the industry and in various sectors of work. Working in Sumedhas is about learning what it means to govern a voluntary organisation in the true sense of the word, where members offer and receive without financial transactions. It means learning how to enliven the spirit of exploration and discovery without necessarily getting caught in predicting outcomes and impact. It means testing one's convictions, integrity and trust in the principle that human connections are inherent and hold potential for individual and collective change and offers of fostering and nurturing that connection cannot be measured in metrics of the marketplace alone. My introduction into the social sector was with Sanlaap - a grassroots organisation that runs shelters for survivors of sex trafficking, provides services to children of women in prostitution in red light areas. Sanlaap has been a pioneer-organisation in drawing attention to sex trafficking in the region of South Asia, and has been an excellent learning ground for me and many others to gain exposure to the issue, learn programming skills and gain an understanding on policy and structural… Show more My introduction into the social sector was with Sanlaap - a grassroots organisation that runs shelters for survivors of sex trafficking, provides services to children of women in prostitution in red light areas.
