Shadowing a bariatric surgeon at the hospital: My duties include observing surgical procedures including pre-op and post-op procedures. I have been able to understand the care and precision involved in surgeries. Learning the intense set up for a procedure as well as the procedure itself, from the administration of anesthesiology to the actual opening of the stomach. The pre and post operation has shown me how empathetic physicians are with their patients, and has been an invaluable experience for me in solidifying my goal of becoming a physician in the future. Our lab studies genetic variation and evolution of behavior using multiple species of fruit flies. Our central questions concern the interplay between individuals and their environments, and the implications of these feedbacks for evolutionary processes. We compare multiple genotypes and species of fruit flies (Drosophila) to understand differences in their behavior under various ecologically-relevant conditions. We also conduct artificial evolution experiments to understand how and why behavior changes over generations. Show less

My project involved investigating protein-protein interactions in bacterial cell division. I made mutants in cell division proteins FtsQ and FtsK in order to measure their ability to crosslink with each other. I performed site-directed mutagenesis, ran agarose gels, SDS-PAGE, and Western Blots. The crosslink was not successful, but I hope to make more mutants to find sites in the proteins where they will be able to crosslink with each other. Kodiak is a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company specializing in novel therapeutics to treat chronic, high-prevalence ophthalmic diseases. I worked on image analysis using a software called ImageJ to help gather data on different drugs’ effects on eye cells, and helped graph the data as well. Examined the cerebral cortex in a mouse and investigated whether a gene called TLE4 up-regulates or down-regulates certain proteins in the deep layered cortex which are known to cause diseases like schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s. This experience confirmed my interest in biology and the medical field, as I dissected mouse brains, sectioned them, created different primers, ran multiple PCR’s and much more in the process of in situ hybridization.
