Our primary crop is our North Shore Tilapia, which are raised in floating cages located in a deep spring-fed pond. For the past six years, this fish has been included on James Beard Award winning Chef Alan Wong’s Honolulu restaurant's nightly menu. HFC has collaborated with State aquaculture researchers and extension agents for many years, contributing fish and time towards refining the culture of these fishes and expanding farming opportunities for others. HFC initiated the first shipments of Pangasius catfish to Hawaii for aquaculture trials in the 1980s, and was involved in early Russian sturgeon research in the 1990s. We have been awarded nine USDA Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Phase I and II grants. As we expand our operations, we are committed to staying true to our goals for sustainability by exploring ways to integrate alternative energy resources, such as wind and solar, into our daily farm operations. We will be incorporating aquaponics to recycle our aquaculture water and fish waste nutrients to grow crops that are organic and food safe. Show less
