January 2012California’s Conservation Agriculture Systems Institute is a powerful force for transformation in California. Since its inception in 1998, it has brought together more than 1,800 farmer, private sector, university, USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service, other public agency and environmental group partners to solve economic and environmental quality challenges associated with farming in California’s Central Valley. It has developed and shared improved agricultural production practices that are moreprofitable, environmentally sound and sustainable. The Institute has been a highly visible promoter of improved crop production and irrigation systems throughout the state. The systems it has pioneered reduce tillage, fuel use and emissions; improve soil, water and air quality; and also make crop production more efficient and less costly. Working in partnership with innovative farmers throughout the Central Valley, the Institute has formulated an ambitious educational initiative aimed at communicating the benefits of conservation agriculture approaches and increasing the adoption of conservation practices throughout California. We welcome your interest in our work.Benefits to California farmers:* Reductions in fuel use, production costs, and dust emissions for corn, tomato and cotton* Increase in soil carbon sequestration* Reduction in soil water evaporation* Increased efficiency irrigationFinancial support for this effort is now needed:* Educational initiative and electronic media program* Equipment acquisition and sharing programs* Conservation cropping systems demonstration projects* Farmer training and farmer educator program* Information outreach campaignhttp://ucanr.org/sites/ct/Dr. Jeff Mitchell559-646-6565
