On September 11th, the world changed for me as it did for most New Yorkers. My daughter, Jessica, was working near the World Trade Center and I spent the day fearing the worst before finally learning she was safe. In that moment I realized that I wanted to do something which would make this type of tragedy less likely. This thought propelled me to begin a three-year long “learning journey” which included extensive travel across the MENA region. With the aid of the Brookings Institute and many others, I came to recognize that youth unemployment was a leading driver of social instability. This understanding lead me to found Education For Employment (EFE). EFE’s primary goal is to provide youth with opportunity and the hope of fulfilling work; empowering them to shape productive lives and communities. Starting with our first program in 2006, EFE has now impacted over 120,000 lives across nine countries. EFE pairs training with market analyses and partnerships with local business, equipping youth with the skills they need to be successful in the modern marketplace. Backed by local boards, trainers, and global hub offices, we are using innovation and education to ensure that youth in MENA are prepared for the jobs of tomorrow. Our efforts focus on the most under-served populations of the region including refugees and young women. In fact, over half of our 120,000 graduates are young women being connected to their first. In 1977, I founded the Brookhill Group. Brookhill is a diversified Real Estate Company that has provided Mortgage Lending and Real Estate redevelopment solutions for troubled, under-valued and distressed properties throughout the country. Since starting EFE, I have turned over the operations to the Brookhill CEO, Charles Kramer, and have focused my attention on expanding the range and impact of EFE.
