As a Royal Commission Peer Support Worker and Policy Support Worker, I assisted with the development of VMIAC’s final report to the Royal Commission into Victoria's Mental Health System, while providing ongoing emotional support to mental health consumers and promoting their engagement with the Royal Commission. In this role I designed and facilitated virtual workshops to capture feedback from mental health consumers on the Commission’s recommendations. I transcribed and analysed workshop and survey data, produced easy-read resources, contributed to the VMIAC blog, and provided one-on-one support for consumers making submissions to the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability. I also gained experience in policy writing and administrative support.

VMIAC is the peak Victorian organisation for mental health consumers. All of our staff have a lived experience as consumers. Our vision is for a world where all mental health consumers stand proud, live a life with choices honoured, rights upheld and these principles embedded in all aspects of society. As a Royal Commission Peer Support Worker, I facilitated focus groups in metropolitan and regional Victoria to assist mental health consumers to make submissions to the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System.
