With the MSU Department of Neuroscience & Zoology, under the guidance of Principle Investigators Dr. Ashlee & Matt Rowe and graduate student worked on venom evolution project. The purpose of the research was focused on sequencing grasshopper mouse sodium and potassium channels in dorsal root ganglion and trigeminal ganglion neurons to find why pain was nulled in grasshopper mice when attacked by a venomous scorpion (centruroides sculpturatus). The goal was to further understand how pain receptors work and observe the differences of pain receptors gene expression in mice relative to humans. Provided research support to all members of lab by reading articles on related pain, sodium and potassium channel sequencing research. Became animal handling trained and certified (IACUC). Aided in upkeep of various lab animals (both prey and predators) . Led research study on grasshopper mice behavior feeding trials and analyzed all data from study. Molecular work included: PCR, gel electrophoresis, RNA isolations, genomic DNA isolation, designing primers on geneious software for sodium/potassium channel sequencing, and prepared buffers, solutions, and autoclaved necessary equipment. Presented research on behavior trials at MSU UURAF (University Undergraduate Research and Arts Forum) Show less

Provided research support under Principle Investigator Dr. Narayanan Parameswaran (MSU Department of Physiology). Research focused on various methods of reducing colitis and the inflammatory response in people who suffer from GI diseases. Designed experiment on over expression of beta-arrestin (1 and 2) proteins in colo-rectal SW-40 cancer cells. Achieved by using basic lab techniques such as; pipetting, cell culturing, bacteria culturing, plasmid extraction, transfection, western blot assay, agrose gel electrophoresis, RNA isolation, cDNA preparation, qPCR. Aided lab with making solutions and buffers needed for molecular work and kept track of lab expenses. Presented research findings at Mid-Michigan Symposium for Undergraduate Research Experiences (Mid-Sure) Show less
