Project title: Guanosine reduces neurotoxicity and motor deficit induced by traumatic brain injury in rats. This project involved the investigation of Guanosine effects on several neurotoxic events following traumatic brain injury in rats. A combination of molecular and biochemical approaches were employed, including dot blot, immunostaining, cytokine Immunoassay kits, [3H] glutamate uptake (slice) and release (crude synaptosomes), oxidative stress, enzymatic and mitochondria assays by colorimetric methods. Stereotaxic surgeries (placement of cortical electrodes to EEG recordings and cannula implantation to induce traumatic brain injury) and behavioral evaluation (memory and motor/locomotion tests) were also performed.

Project title: Ergogenic compounds and physical exercise as a therapeutic strategy in acute epileptic seizures and post-traumatic seizures in rats/mice.This project involved the characterization of caffeine and creatine supplementation effects in pentylenetetrazol-induced acute seizures. Moreover, the role of creatine supplementation and physical exercise on susceptibility to epileptic seizures after traumatic brain injury were investigated. A combination of skills were employed on this project including: stereotaxic surgeries (EEG electrodes; cannula implant to delivery drugs (i.c.v); craniectomy to implant the traumatic brain injury cannula in the FPI model. Drug delivery (oral gavage, intraperitoneal and Intracerebroventricular injections). Induction of exercise (swimming and treadmill exercise). Behavior assessment based on Racine scale (Seizure severity). Biochemical analyses (enzyme activity assays and oxidative stress by colorimetric methods).
