Through a pilot project funded by the Government of Saskatchewan, Western Economic Diversification, and Saskatchewan Polytechnic to create the Saskatchewan Manufacturing Centre of Excellence, the workforce development portfolio entailed engaging youth and Aboriginals in the manufacturing industry, and sharing human resources best practices to its members.Creating awareness of the manufacturing industry and its wealth of career offerings was achieved through partnerships with industry-education councils and Aboriginal groups by participating in career-related events while utilizing hands-on manufacturing-related activities. On the human resources side, I assisted in developing and implementing a variety of professional development programs, including the Manufacturing Management Certificate with Athabasca University, and the Leadership Boot Camp. Additionally, I led two human resources special interest groups within our membership. From an operational perspective, I was very involved in CME's productivity portfolio and the variety of lean training and consortia that CME offered, where I discovered my passion for operational excellence.Working with this organization has been a real eye-opener in understanding the manufacturing industry and appreciating all that is made in Saskatchewan.

Senior Human Resources Advisor

Mar 2014 - Dec 2014
Moving into a senior role allowed me to focus on strategic areas of human resources. I became more involved in recruitment for senior- and management-level positions, compensation and the process for annual salary reviews, the job evaluation process and the role it plays in ensuring internal equity, as well as managing culpable and non-culpable absences.I truly appreciated being able to work for a Japanese organization and to get a feel for the Japanese culture as it relates to business.

Human Resources Coordinator
-
Mar 2011 - Mar 2014
Joining MHPSC was where my learning curve was the greatest from a leadership perspective. My leader was truly an inspiration and taught me more than I thought I ever needed to know regarding respect for people, values, managing expectations, and servant leadership. With these areas as a foundation, I have built long-lasting relationships with employees at all levels of the organization. I worked closely with management and operations in the areas of recruitment, performance management, employee relations, and compensation. What I enjoyed the most was that anyone from the shop floor to senior management was able to approach me for coaching and support as it related to human resources issues.

Human Resources Clerk

Sep 2009 - Jan 2011
I was fortunate enough to be able to gain HR-related experience by working part-time throughout university with CNH. This allowed me to gain a greater understanding of the administrative side of human resources, including conducting reference checks, filing, and assisting in general projects. Additionally, this is where I really got a taste of what a lean transformation actually looked like in an organization, since CNH had recently began its journey in World-Class Manufacturing.Since I grew up on a farm that also ran "yellow," working at CNH was very exciting, as it gave me a greater purpose than just a part-time university job.

Human Resources Assistant (Co-op Placement)

Jan 2009 - Aug 2009
After being accepted into the Business Co-operative Education Program, I was placed with New Food Classics - a meat processing and packaging facility. I was able to act in a greater capacity than an assistant role, and into more of a generalist role. From creating job postings to assisting in employee relations and union activity, my greatest accomplishment was keeping up with the entire recruitment process during peak production by hiring over 120 people. From being a participant of joint industry and education partnerships, I am able to see first-hand the importance that industry plays in supporting students by being able to offer experience in their field. Without being exposed to this experience prior to graduating, I would not be where I am today.

Metal Fabricator
-
Jun 2004 - Aug 2006
This is where my interest for manufacturing, and perhaps lean, began. As a metal fabricator, I operated a variety of equipment, including a shear, punch press, iron worker, saw, and break press in order to form raw material to its drawing. Because of this hands-on experience, I truly have an appreciation for going to the "gemba" which has helped immensely in my human resources roles.
