    • Marshalling
      • Oct 2019 - Oct 2019

I was given this amazing opportunity to participate in the marshalling scheme to shadow HHJ Neil Clark for two days at Leeds Crown Court. This experience gave me an insight on the approach the judges take when hearing arguments from barristers on different cases. I had the opportunity to witness sexual assault and rape cases and discuss them with HHJ Clark.

My job was to sit behind counsel for a family law case that was on care proceedings. In order to assist the solicitor’s firm, I made minutes of the whole case proceedings and updated them with it. I shadowed the barrister and observed the conferences that took place with the client. Not only I witnessed excellent advocacy and cross examination but examined the complexities that may be involved in such sensitive family cases.

This is a fantastic pro bono project where I get the chance to enhance my presentation, team work and organisation skills by helping the Pro Bono centre to deliver lessons to school children about different aspects of law including crime, employment and human rights. I have delivered a presentation on ‘The Women’s rights to vote’ at one of the primary schools which was a great opportunity for me to polish my public speaking skills as I had to deliver such legal information and awareness to an audience of year 6.

    • Mini pupillage
      • Aug 2019 - Aug 2019

During this two day mini pupillage I shadowed criminal law barristers and attended crown court with them. I had the opportunity to witness trials and sentencing from Judges. I observed the technicalities which may arise in cases involving sexualExposure and possession of phone in prison. I witnessed how barristers may ask permission from the judge to get more time to gather more information in relation to an important matter. It gave me an insight on how barristers do their best to represent their clients in court. I also had the privilege to attend conferences where barristers would take updated instructions from their client prior to the hearing and made sure to fully deal with it at trial.
