Worked in the design department on a range of equipment for the UK rail industry. Samuel James Engineering is a leading provider of Electrical Distribution equipment for the UK rail industry, including Signalling Power systems, Distribution Cubicles, Lighting Control Cubicles, and Points Heating Control Cubicles My duties included low voltage design, CAD drawings, and the creation of parts lists and purchase orders for a range of projects, mainly in the rail M&E sector, involving DNO cabinets, Points Heating Control Cubicles, Lighting Control, and Signalling Power equipment. The company received loose single line diagrams and general arrangements from designers, and must interpret these designs into a manufacture ready system, including general arrangements, schematics and parts lists. I assisted across a wide range of projects in the rail industry, compiling schematics, general arrangements and testing documentation. As part of the wider Unipart Rail operation, I worked as part of a team to on-board a new product at the Leicester site. This has involved the refinement of test procedures, site visits to ascertain the existing standard operating procedures, and development of parts lists and purchasing. I was responsible for the day to day management of a project to compile and write Operation and Maintenance Manuals for a major resignalling project in the south-west, including document management, project management, client interfacing, and requests for information. Worked on small scale control panel design, including replacement of solenoid valves with electronic expansion valves in control panels, with modifications in existing equipment. Contributing CAD drawings to various projects, mainly in the process freezing sector, working with the Starfrost business unit. Consulted on specification for various process freezing applications, adding additional detail to add clarity to the exisiting specifications. Sep 2016 - Aug 2017
Worked within teams on a range of projects in the Heavy Rail, Light Rail, Aviation, Process and Automation and Building Services sectors. Provided AutoCAD, Amtech ProDesign, Amtech SingleCable, Bentley Hevacomp Electrical and general engineering support. I also contributed research on cable mathematical analysis, arc flash hazard, and field insulation testing of cables and connectors in AGL installations. As part of my role, I also was responsible for 2 Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) projects related to Microsoft Excel. These automated various business processes for the Process and Automation team. In February, I was transferred to the Manchester office. During this time, I also took part in a number of site visits to a range of transportation, industrial and commercial premises, inspecting electrical distribution equipment such as incomers, distribution board, and associated documentation in preparation for design work upon it. I also prepared drawings, technical reports and schedules from calculation packages such as Amtech ProDesign and Hevacomp Connect. Towards the end of my placement, I supervised a summer placement student for 4 weeks, providing support and advice as required. I participated in multidiscipline meetings regarding my major project, contributing to discussion and explaining limitations and requirements of the electrical process with regards to specific applications. I supported the M&E team on a range of projects in the Industrial sector. My major work was a loading dock for a major automotive client. as part of this, I developed the design of the ducting and containment within the project area, as well as contributing Amtech Designs. I participated in a site visit to a luxury car manufacturer. From this, I researched pressure testing of buildings to Part L of the Building Regulations, as there was particulate contamination in the paint shop of this site. I liaised with the Mechanical engineering team, and the HVAC team to both research and develop a methodology and scope of works for the project, as part of the tendering process, as well as discussing the problem with suppliers to ensure that the most appropriate solution was found.
