Three years with the artillery battalion in 29 Palms, followed by two years on Okinawa, with six months in the Republic of Korea. Operations officer for US Marine amphibious exercises on Iwo Jima and Pohang, South Korea. Aide to the Commanding General, Camp S.D. Butler, Okinawa (General Hank Stackpole). Also proud to have worked as the Camp Foster Billeting officer for the base CG, General James Day. Member of US Marine exchange program with Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces. US Army Airborne (parachute) qualified. Medical discharge (knee injuries in both Japan and South Korea). On Okinawa, I started my lifelong study of Japanese, and have remained interested in all things Japan to include US-Japan defense issues, and have written extensively in the Marine Corps Gazette and other publications in the US and Japan (e.g. "The Futenma Problem," "An Idea That Just Won't Float," "Okinawa: They Paved Paradise and Put Up a Parking Lot").
