Principal at Hartwell School in northern Cincinnati, Ohio. Hartwell is a PK-8th grade campus serving approximately 600 students that primarily live in the neighborhoods of Hartwell and Carthage. About one quarter of the student population receives ESL services and 100% of the student body is eligible for the Free Lunch Program. Hartwell School is a great small school within a large urban district - students at Hartwell achieve at high levels academically and consistently perform higher than the district averages as well as other similar schools throughout the state. Building Principal at Reading Middle School. I have served in this capacity since the 2011-12 school year, and I served in the same role at Reading Hilltop Elementary for a total of 4 years prior to moving to RMS. My responsibilities at Reading Middle include: instructional leadership with a focus on curriculum development, assessment and data analysis, instructional strategy coaching, technology integration, formal and informal evaluation of all certified and civil service staff, behavior management, special education, 504 case management, and coordination of professional development for staff members. RMS is a relatively new school created four years ago within the district to better meet the needs of our middle grades students. Academic achievement is currently on the rise. On the last two state report cards, RMS has earned 7/7 indicators, made AYP in all areas, and fallen within a half of a point of 100 on the performance index. When compared to other middle schools in Ohio with comparable demographics RMS is amongst the most successful. For this reason, Reading Middle was recognized in the Spring of 2013 as an Ohio and National School to Watch. RMS is one of approximately 24 middle schools statewide and one of approximately 325 middle schools nationwide to earn this distinction over the last 10 years. Additionally, RMS has implemented a one-to-one iPad initiative for every student during the 2013-14 school year. This program began as a conversation at the onset of the 2012-13 school year and our successes now are the result of a tremendous amount of planning, research and preparation leading up to the 2013-14 school year. The instructional strategies, curriculum opportunities and assessment techniques / data analysis systems that we now have access to have transformed our small school into a model middle school for the 21st century.
