Steel Works Surveilance Inspector
-
Jul 2013 - Jul 2017
My role is that of a field steelworks surveillance inspector monitoring all fabrication, welding, bolting and, to a lesser degree, shot-blasting and painting and reporting back to the EDT. The EDT consists of senior engineers from ARUP and Jacobs who have been engaged by Transport Scotland to monitor the building of the bridge. The bridge builders are FCBC, a consortium of Scottish, Spanish, German and American contractors. My role requires me to have in-depth knowledge of the following codes and duties are listed below: EN1090, EN1011, EN15614, EN14555, EN9606, ISO5817, EN9692 • Monitoring contractor health and safety. • Checking that all works carried out comply with the contractors welding works quality plan. • Verifying and recording all pre-weld fit up including weld gap and flatness across joint. • Ensuring that the contractor has the correct WPS in place for that joint and that the welder understands it, particularly as the welding contractor is from Croatia. • Checking weld parameters / consumables are compliance with the WPS. • Observing the Independent Inspection Authority (IIA) to ensure that he is monitoring all welding operations. • Ensuring that the NDT contractor performs the correct amount of weld testing and also in the correct location. • Periodic calculation of welder’s heat input. • Spot checks on consumable storage and distribution to the welders. • Checking for any code non compliances and reporting back to engineer. • Keeping a daily log to compare with the contractor’s handover certificate. Non Welding Related Duties • Monitoring all bolting operations; there are over 250,000 bolts on the project some are tightened using the part turn method and some are tightened using a DTI washer; there are also tension control bolts. • Checking on the bolting teams to ensure that they are installing the correct grade of bolt for that particular location.
