Architect, design, discuss, build, and assist with the automation of the web infrastructure, including replication of data across multiple datacenters, interaction with overseas offices and developers, integrating, supporting and replacing legacy systems, and optimising production systems to support web traffic of over 7000 hits per second. Also worked with the data analysis team on the Hadoop clusters, automating as much of the build process as feasible, and dealing with faults, both resolving after they occurred, and preparing beforehand. The major function of my role was to design, plan, and build a secure network and infrastructure system, using Linux, to minimise the load on MediaSurface, the core CMS, supporting 400+ clients. The work I undertook included; scripted and manual builds (Jumpstart for Solaris and equiv for Linux; including kernel tuning, package building, design, and documentation); consistent system configuration; selection and installation of hardware; plan, implement and support N+1 (or more) redundancy for 40+ Linux and Solaris servers and Cisco network infrastructure; expansion capability planning and implementation; designed, installed, configured, and supported the Linux firewall layers/DMZ area, including updates/expansions; ensuring stable replication of all published data across multiple clusters in multiple sites; building and supporting ancillary clustered servers including: Apache Tomcat (both mod_jk & mod_jk2), secure client access (mod_rewrite + mod_perl + mod_ssl); self-signed and server-signed certificate administration and configuration, php sites (mod_php / php_cgi), MySQL database setup, replication and configuration, migrating apps to a standardised build, including from SLES, RedHat, and others, DNS (both internal and caching) NIS, NFS; backups (backup app, scripted, and application level), reverse proxy caching servers (squid), load balancing (ipvs/ldirectord and Alteon), configuration of network and system monitoring, including selecting suitable systems and re-configuring under new apps (nagios, Big Brother, etc), additional network and server setup. Systems involved for support included Solaris, Oracle, Slackware and RedHat Enterprise Linux, MySQL, perl/mod_perl, java, apache, tomcat, PHP, MediaSurface, PostgreSQL, Cisco switches, Alteon (now Nortel) load balancers, iptables, ipvs, BruPro backup software, NIS, NFS, Squid, SSL, Jumpstart, rsync, bash scripting, ftp, heartbeat, htdig, bind, tftp/network booting.
