John Finan
Robert Burgess was President/COO of Eatel, a regional telecommunications company, when he served as Board Vice Chair of St Elizabeth Hospital, our undeclared innovation incubator. On the retirement of a long tenured and extremely successful CEO, he was invited to assume that role. His leadership strengthened an existing culture of innovation and performance excellence, as well as expanded our community leadership role. His attributes and skills were also valuable in our support to the New Orleans East post-Katrina. Robert provided leadership, guidance, and support to our team on the ground in reestablishing health care services where the local hospital had been severely damaged. We again called on his abilities when we assumed operation of the LSU Hospital in Bogalusa. Robert effectively led the transition process and integration of the new entity to our Health System and was appointed as our representative to the Board of Directors to assure continuing oversight. Robert consistently demonstrated a commitment to our mission of healing in the traditions of the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady and exhibited strong moral and ethical character. His engaging personality and visibility with staff at all levels were notable strengths. Physicians were especially supportive of his vision for continuous improvement and leadership in the organization.

I had the distinct privilege of working with Robert when he was appointed Interim CEO of Woman’s Hospital by its board of directors. He assumed this role at a critically important time of transition for the organization and had a significant positive impact over the course of his appointment. Robert really
