      I have a 50% Teaching (Urban Forestry minor advisor)/50% Extension appointment that gives me the opportunity to educate students and green industry professionals. Classes taught include Landscape Plants HORT 3030 (3 h)--identify and become familiar with the aesthetic and functional value of ~225 ornamental plants; Urban Tree Care FOR (HORT) 4270, 6270 (3 h)--learn the principles and professional practices of arboriculture and apply them in the design, implementation and/or maintenance of sustainable environments; Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) HORT 4000 (1-3 h)--prepare and participate in competitive events at Student Career Days (http://www.studentcareerdays.org/). Taught Dendrology FOR 200 (2 h)--learn the classification, nomenclature, and identification of the principal forest trees of the U.S., their geographical distribution, ecological requirements, and economic importance. As former State Master Gardener Coordinator (July 1990 – Sept 2006), I continue to educate residents, and green industry professionals through seminars, workshops, and electronic media. Also, I support the Clemson Extension Home & Garden Information Center (http://www.clemson.edu/extension/hgic/; 1.888.656.9988) by writing/cowriting fact sheets, and diagnose and recommend solutions to plant problems submitted to the Plant Problem Clinic (Plant Diagnostic Information System®). As SC Botanical Garden Liaison, I develop mutually beneficial partnerships among Extension personnel (agents, specialists, and volunteers), University faculty and students, and other organizations to enhance teaching, research, and outreach efforts that lead to awareness, understanding, and new discoveries.
