Currently I am working in the Community and Districts Empowerment for Scale Up (CODES) project. The project runs in 13 implementation and 8 control districts in Uganda. It (the CODES) is a learning project aimed at demonstrating how a management & community empowerment strategy can be taken to scale. The project aims to improve coverage and quality of a set of interventions that will reduce child deaths. Interventions specifically target major causes of childhood morbidity and mortality including inter alia; diarrhea, malaria and pneumonia: The CODES has 3 parts:-Ensure the best interventions are used to reduce child death & illness in each district-Help managers use simple tools to improve how their district health teams perform-Help communities demand, access and receive better quality servicesThe project is implemented in a consortium involving players within the steering committee (MoH-Uganda, GATES [donor], UNICEF [major recipient] and academia [Makerere Univeristy School of Public Health and Karolinka University]). UNICEF sub-contracted the implementation to Child Fund International and LSTM (my employer). ACODE handles the community empowerment component. As senior health systems mentor in this project, my main roles include; building the capacity of biostatisticians to participate in and execute LQAS surveys; perform bottle neck analysis and causal analysis; work plan development; and support the DHT to plan and conduct continuous quality improvement interventions in health facilities in areas targeting child survival. In addition, I am expected to write manuscripts for publication. Show less

While with CUAMM, I served as Project Officer for Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health (MNCH) (South Karamoja); and as resident Technical Advisor for Napak District. My main duties were to oversee the project execution in the four components of: 1) Technical assistance. 2) MNCH. 3)Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV (eMTCT) and 4) Nutrition. The project resulted into tremendous improvement in MNCH indicators. Both the supply side (quality of care) and demand-side (uptake of service) indicators showed great positive change. A case in point is the rise in institutional deliveries from 24% by June 2013 to 60% the quarter October-December 2014. Aside from project leadership, one of my duties was to build capacity of the district health teams (DHT) to plan, implement, monitor and evaluate health service delivery. Show less
