IRANZ is an association of independent research organisations. IRANZ represents the collective interests of members by undertaking activities aimed at creating a positive operating environment for Independent Research Organisations in New Zealand. IRANZ member organisations make vital contributions to a broad range of scientific fields, and offer an important complement to university-based and Crown Research Institute research. Our smaller sizes and greater flexibility provide an environment that is particularly conducive to innovation and end-user engagement. www.iranz.org.nz Show less

The BusinessNZ Energy Council is a group of New Zealand organisations taking on a leading role in creating a sustainable energy future for New Zealand. From 1 January 2013 the BusinessNZ Energy Council brings together the memberships of BusinessNZ and the former Energy Federation of New Zealand. Our current initiative is the BEC 2050 Energy Scenarios Project, an outreach from the WEC World Energy Scenarios: Composing energy futures to 2050 we're asking "what does NZ look like when the rest of the world is in Jazz or Symphony". We are hoping that BEC2050 will be something quite powerful for NZ which takes the issues out of the political arena and enables a decent debate Show less

I served 25 years first as Director of the Coal Research Association of New Zealand, and then Chief Executive and Managing Director of CRL Energy. It was an exciting 25 years when we saw CRL Energy more than double in size and prosper, even through tough times for the industry, whilst similar research associations in countries with much bigger coal industries like Australia, the UK, Canada and US disappeared. During my last few years as Chief Executive CRL Energy consistently scored well on research organisation KPIs, and remained profitable. CRL Energy supported my involvement in in New Zealand membership of the World Energy Council (through EFNZ and the BusinessNZ Energy Council), and in particular my role as Executive Chair of the WEC Flagship Energy Scenarios Programme, and also the IEA Clean Coal Centre and IEA GHG programme.Following the purchase of CRL Energy from the Coal Association of New Zealand by New Zealand Coal and Carbon Ltd. (NZCC), I took up a 2 year appointment as Chief Science Advisor to CRL Energy and the Coal Association. This appointment has now come to an end and I depart CRL Energy with very mixed feelings to take up new interests including as Executive officer of IRANZ the peak body for Independent Research Organisations in New Zealand.
