Perhaps the most prestigious errand-runner position in the nation, I also gave tours of the U.S. Capitol Building for special guests of House members. Aside from the House floor, the job gave me access to the most private, off-limits areas of the Capitol and surrounding House and Senate office buildings, allowing me to observe very famous people engage in the sausage-making process that is legislating in a way the average person could never imagine. I was appointed by my own representative, James Roosevelt (D, Beverly Hills), after writing a letter asking how one goes about becoming a page. I was one of the very few pages whose family was not politically connected or related to his sponsor. (In other words, my parents never donated big bucks.)
