Rob and I worked together at ING Direct for almost three years. In that time, Rob headed up the Application Development teams. Rob was focused on building strong, self-managed teams. His teams consistently ranked amongst the highest in employee satisfaction within our group, and this set a bar and a significant challenge for the rest of IT. Rob is a strategic thinker and was always pushing the team to consider new ways of delivering software. He empowered his team to take ideas that they had researched and put them into action in a 'safe to fail and try again' environment. This was one of the key factors in his employee satisfaction scores. This also challenged the team working directly for him, as along with the empowerment he bestowed came a responsibility for his direct reports to deliver. This was a catalyst for growth for many people. I enjoyed working with Rob. He was a person who wanted our peer group to work in a highly functional environment as a team and was hugely supportive of me leading the delivery group.
