My primary duty as a Packaging Engineer / CAD Designer for Prime Packaging Solutions is to design custom packaging solutions to solve the critical packaging challenges of our customers. I provide technical sales support to Prime Packaging’s sales team, and our suppliers, to provide our customers with the best packaging solutions to fit their needs. In this role, I have designed packaging for many different products using a myriad of engineered packaging materials such as corrugated fiberboard, plastic corrugated board, paperboard, honeycomb, poly bags, and wood. The software I primarily use for package design is ArtiosCAD, but I also use Rhinoceros 3D too. I frequently have designed packaging for Tier 1 Automotive Suppliers that produce Class-A surface parts where maximizing protection and pack densities per pallet load is impeccable to making their operation more efficient. For my first year at Prime Packaging Solutions, in addition to my responsibilities as a designer, I also was responsible for overseeing inventory management and warehouse operations. One of my major accomplishments in this area was reducing errors in inventory receiving, tracking, and shipping by 98% by implementing ISO 9001:5015 compliant SOPs.

My primary duty as a Packaging Design Engineer for Sealed Air Corporation was to design custom packaging solutions to protect the customer’s products from damage during distribution. In this role, I provided technical sales support to the Sealed Air Territory Business Managers (TBMs) and solve the packaging challenges of the customer. Therefore, I often worked closely with the TBMs, as well as distributors, and directly with the customer, to create the best packaging solution for protecting the customer's products and also fitting their sustainability needs. The majority of the projects I completed were engineered packaging solutions that utilized Instapak foam to create custom pre-molded cushioning solutions for the customer. One of the tools I used most frequently is the CAD software Rhinoceros 3D to create 3D models of the packaging solution. Once the package concept wass approved, I then use the RhinoCAM software to generate programs for our CNC routing machine to mill the custom Instapak molds to produce cushion prototypes for presentation to the customer. Some of the other packaging materials I worked with on a regular basis include Bubble Wrap, paper, expanded polyethylene foam (EPE), and corrugated fiberboard. I also became proficient in the use of ArtiosCAD and a Kongsberg X cutting table for packaging designs using EPE and corrugated fiberboard. Many of my customers requested that their prototype package be performance tested under the guidelines set by the International Safe Transit Association (ISTA). To provide better support to the TBMs and customers, I became a Certified Packaging Laboratory Professional (Technician Level) by ISTA.

My primary duty as a Truck Driver for the Michigan State University Surplus Store & Recycling Center was to pick up and deliver items to/from customers on Michigan State's campus using large box trucks. The items I picked up on campus were for the purpose of sustainability and diverting waste such as furniture, lab equipment, computers, etc. from the local landfill. At times, I was also responsible for driving a miniature compactor truck around campus to collect recycling from the residence halls and other buildings. This position taught me the importance of team-work and clear, concise communication with my co-pilot to achieve our stops in the most efficient manner possible.

My primary duty as a Co-op Packaging Engineer for Sealed Air Corporation was to provide aide to the Packaging Design Team. I supported the packaging design team in a number of ways. Such as, conducting package performance testing, following the guidelines set by the International Safe Transit Association, and generating reports outlining the results from the testing. It was also my responsibility to write all project summary and packaging value analysis reports for the Packaging Design Team too. In addition, all outgoing shipments were under my responsibility. Coordinating closely with small parcel, and LTL, carriers was required to ensure all our packages were delivered to the customers on time. After the first couple months of my co-op, I was essentially working as a full time Packaging Design Engineer with nearly all of the same responsibilities, such as providing technical sales support to Sealed Air Territory Business managers to solve critical packaging challenges of the customer and being independently responsible for my own projects.
