Richard Vaughan

I worked with Rob when on the Marketing Committee at BFPA. I always found Rob to have a very professional but friendly approach to everything he and I were involved in.

As its CEO, I’m very proud to have led BVAA through its transition from a declining body of purely manufacturers, to the broader-based, valve-industry supply chain association it has become in its ‘BVAA’ era. I’ve also overseen a 4-fold growth in membership, with similar scale improvements across all financial aspects of the business. While doing so, we have moved from being impoverished co-renters with another association, to providing the membership with a fabulous and modern headquarters and training facility in Banbury, Oxfordshire, that it now owns outright. Concurrently, and despite being a not-for-profit organisation, myself and my team have managed to massively grow the services portfolio to support our loyal members, including the introduction of our own Training schemes, Desktop exhibitions, our own Valve User Magazine, an Annual Dinner Dance, 2 Websites, PR-writing assistance, and promotion in the trade press. We also added Global & UK market forecasts, Supplier Days, Regional meetings, Golf Days, Sales Leads information, Valve World Group Stand, Trade show representation, Social Media, Future Leaders Programme, standards meetings’ travel funding, Technical Expert Groups, Technical HotSpots, the new-look User Manual, Free Directives Guides, the BVAA Business Shield Service (HR, HS&S, Legal), our Online document library, website promotion, free specialist Technical advisors, and many, many more. The finances of those of us in the not-for-profit sector are notoriously difficult to manage and develop, but we have made BVAA an Association of which its members can be extremely proud, delivering outstanding value. At BFPA I was responsible for running the entire Technical Dept, managing the Association's globally-recognised contribution to technical and standardisation projects. This entailed managing all aspects of our partnerships and interactions with BSI (later managing all the day-to-day BSI fluid power commitee work), the International Organisation for Standards (ISO/TC131), and it's European counterpart CEN. This covered Gas-Loaded Accumulators (inc. a CEN TC54 WG Secretariat), Hydraulic pumps, Cylinders, Connectors, Valves, Contamination Control, Seals, Motors, Testing, Hydraulic Systems and Hydraulic Fluids. I also provided the Technical Secretariat to the European body CETOP, and was Secretary to its 'G6' Hydraulic Fluids and Seals committee. I accompanied the UK delegations in their many travels across the globe providing committees with impeccable secretarial support, as well as unofficial social secretary. Show less

      • Sep 1984 - Dec 1993

Following an engineering apprenticeship, I joined the Norgren manufacturing arm and soon became the company's first formally qualified Quality Engineer. Later I joined the PR Dept. and was made responsible for the creation of company catalogues, press releases, promotional literature, etc. bringing together the combined knowledge of all relevant contributors and partners. Also the sole end-to-end compiler, co-ordinator, editor and manager of the global content of the Journal of Applied Pneumatics, produced in-house in multiple languages and distributed around the world.
