I had been searching for a research opportunity in order to apply the math and science I had been studying to real problems. Through this experience, I witnessed connections between the fields of math and science manifest themselves in the laboratory, and became aware of my desire to use research to help other people. This project involved further research into the characteristics of a specific genus of bacteria, Bifidobacterium. The main goal of the project was to determine the nature of polyP granule growth in certain bacteria under certain environmental conditions. There were two separate stages of the experiment. First, we tested a method of quantitatively determining the granule growth by measuring fluorescence using DAPI staining. Secondly, we tested the growth of polyP granules under various environmental conditions, such as the exposure to indole, sucrose, and glucose. Show less
