Director of ELL Reception & Resource Centre
-
Jul 2016 - Aug 2016
As Director of the new English Language Learning (ELL) Reception and Resource Center, I developed and introduced a new program to address needs of students and teachers at BCIS. In the ELL Reception class, children who are new to our bilingual environment and in the early stages of language acquisition will be attend introductory English classes to ease their transition into our learning environment. Their classes in the BCIS Reception & Resource Centre help students to build basic skills needed to transition into their BCIS English classrooms. The Resource element of this centre provides instructional support for our staff team, including both English and Vietnamese personnel, to design programs which support the varied student needs. The two primary foci for this program are: 1) to design universally-accessible, equitable and inclusive classrooms, and 2) to support differentiated instruction and assessment for ELLs. In this role, I started developing this program in the months before the contract began. After 2 weeks in the position, I was offered an administrative role in another one of our schools, and the position was taken by a new colleague. I am pleased to know that this resource program has taken off and is working well for students at BCIS.
