I was based at a Public Health Lab whereby we tested for Measles & Rubella, Dengue, Leptospirosis, Rotavirus, HIV, Influenza and Water sanitation. Our major role and responsibility was to test for these diseases and to be on alert on any outbreaks. We participated in major stakeholder meetings and worked alongside with major NGOs such World Health Organisation, SPC and Australian Aid. My responsibilities included collection of blood samples from Rheumatic heart disease patients and extracting DNA from the whole blood using the Salt-Extraction Technique. I also had to store and ship the DNA aliquots to the UK for genetic sequencing. Other duties included isolating plasma and peripheral blood mononuclear cells and storing them in liquid nitrogen. I worked as an intern at the CWM Hospital in Suva for an year. I got trained in all 7 disciplines of medical lab. I then got transferred to Lautoka and worked in the Haematology department for 1 and half year and also in Transfusion Medicine during shift work and on-call. Other roles included phlebotomy, donor bleeding, participating in EQA programmes such as RCPA and PPTC, stock-taking and ordering of items and equipment maintenance.
