Director of Camp Kesem at University of Oregon

Camp Kesem is a nationwide non-profit dedicated to supporting children through and beyond a parent's cancer. As Director, I am responsible for facilitating year-round operations and directing two, free sessions of camp for children impacted by a parent's cancer. During the year, I manage 23 coordinators and support various departments such as fundraising events, public relations, program planning, camper recruitment and community outreach. I lead weekly, goal-focused meetings with our coordinators and empower them to meet their project deadlines through frequent communication and providing hands-on support, resources and guidelines. I adapted Kesem Nationals, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion movement by brainstorming with our coordinating team about specific ways our chapter could embody these values. One of the main projects we committed to was broadening our camper family demographic by creating relationships with organizations, hospitals, healthcare clinics, etc. throughout the state of Oregon. As a result, we expanded out campers served by over 30% in just one year. I created the Junior Program at my chapter to ensure leadership sustainability through mentorship of younger members. I also facilitated the transition to a new campsite to accommodate for the growth of our chapter.

As volunteer coordinator, I recruited and interviewed all potential volunteers, organized committees, and led trainings for the volunteers. This year, I led about 20 separate training sessions for about 100 volunteers. On average, I spend between 10 and 15 hours a week preparing and leading trainings and other activities.

I tutored 9 student-athletes at the University of Oregon in Spanish and International Studies. Dedicated to their academic success, I met with each student 1-2 times a week for 1-hour. As the program assistant, I helped kickstart the new Global Health Minor in 2018 by supporting faculty, creating a program brochure and orientation material and planning program orientation and commencement. I served as a liaison between faculty and students to convey student interests and needs. Additionally, I promoted the Global Health Program by conducting community outreach across campus to connect with potentially interested students. I also created a database for research field experience opportunities and started a Linked-In community to facilitate Global Health alumni collaboration.

I was in India for 10 weeks, partaking in three program foci including: "Public Health Delivery Innovations and Community Medicine" in Delhi, "Maternal and Child Health" in Pune and "Infectious Diseases and Hospital Medicine" in Mumbai. I spent my time learning from various NGO's related to public health, sexual and reproductive health, education campaigns, women's empowerment groups etc. At each organization, I had the opportunity to meet and speak with community health workers, female sex workers, counselors, directors and doctors about health concerns, needs and programs addressing these challenges.

I aim to engage the community by using social media as a platform to inform Lane County of events and news related to the C.H.I.P goals. I also input data including Lane County demographics and social determinants. I use this data to create meaningful infographics. Additionally, I attend C.H.I.P program meetings to gain insight on the development of the plan.
