Pre-Medical Intern
-
Jul 2020 - Aug 2020
As a Pre-Medical Intern at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, I was exposed to both the clinical and administrative sides of healthcare. I spent my summer in the Department of General Internal Medicine working specifically to determine what physicians need to deliver telemedicine successfully. I also participated in a Hospital-Wide research project in relation to COVID-19 and at-risk patients residing in the south and west sides of Chicago. I screened patients who lived in these areas for food & housing access, domestic violence, and other situations that could lead to negative health outcomes. The outreach also included small things such as asking if they needed a prescription refill or had any questions for their current primary care physician. This project introduced me to the area of public health in its true form and I was able to see how Northwestern could perform positive outreach and direct patients to the resources necessary to provide quality care to patients in underprivileged communities. In addition to these projects, I shadowed physicians on a weekly basis. Specifically, I had the privilege to work in the Neonatal ICU, Department of Women's Health, Department of Ophthalmology, Department of Surgery, Neurological Testing Center, and Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute. I found most interest in Women’s Health(GYN) and Ophthalmology (specifically, Neuro-Ophthalmology). All of these aspects of the internship have thoroughly solidified my passion for medicine and have given me skills to use in future endeavors in the medical space. Show less
