The Communications & Public Education team has three primary areas of responsibility: managing traditional communications, facilitating the agency’s public education programs, and coordinating public requests for agency speakers or equipment displays in the community. In addition to these primary responsibilities, as the manager I serve as the agency’s intergovernmental liaison, assist the sheriff in monitoring state and federal legislative activity, and maintain communication with various community partners. On the traditional communications front, the team manages content for the agency’s website and intranet, drafts community correspondence, produces various print publications, develops print and multimedia assets, handles photography and videography, and maintains the agency’s social media presence. Examples of some of our major, recurring projects include our weekly social media video series, “The Weekly 150,” our bi-weekly newsletter, “Inside the Star,” and our quarterly agency news magazine, “News & Views.” The agency maintains a robust suite of public education programs around a nationally-recognized citizens police academy program – the Sheriff’s Citizens Academy (SCA). The program, that provides citizens a hands-on, behind-the-scenes look at the agency, is 11-weeks long and held four times per year. In addition to the SCA, the agency hosts similar programming for children ages 8-13 and teens ages 14-18. Between all these programs, members of the team find themselves facilitating programming 48 weeks out of the year. The public submits hundreds of requests for the agency’s involvement throughout the year. These requests are reviewed, vetted, and coordinated by Communications & Public Education. Events can range from a simple visit to a boy or girl scout troop to a large touch-a-truck event involving multiple assets. We also provide support major agency events throughout the year. Show less
