  Designed and implemented a full page editorial layout system for the South China Morning Post, a key component of the newspaper's shift of all editorial, production and press systems to a new purpose-built facility. The position involved testing and assessment of available technology, design and implementation of the system and overseeing the training of more than 100 editorial staff.   Richard joined the cadet training scheme with Lynn News & Advertiser, part of UK publishing giant EMAP. He completed the National Council for the Training of Journalists proficiency scheme and worked as a reporter and later sub-editor on this busy bi-weekly local newspaper. Witnessed the first appearance in public of Prince Charles and local girl Diana Spencer at Sandringham church. Accompanied locally-based RAF personnel on Ascension Island during Falklands conflict.
