8th Grade English Intern
-
May 2011 - Present
Led by master teacher John Coates, the Collegiate Middle School English internship is a highly competitive teacher apprenticeship program designed to prepare the participant for a full time teaching position at the conclusion of the internship. The last three interns have accepted full time teaching positions in the Middle School at Collegiate at the conclusion of their internships. The internship includes a transitional process which begins with the intern sitting in on English classes taught by John Coates. Coates, hailed as one of the most respected English teachers in the area over the past thirty years, teaches the most advanced English class offered at the Collegiate Middle School. Over the course of the internship the participant receives increased opportunities to teach classes with, and ultimately without, guidance from Mr. Coates. The reading materials covered in the class include The Odyssey by Homer, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare, and other selections of short stories, poetry and essays (includes authors Edgar Allen Poe, Jack London). The class focuses not just on literature but on improving writing mechanics and paper structure. Show less

Head Women's JV Volleyball Coach (Team Gold)
-
Aug 2012 - Present
Interscholastic JV Women's Volleyball Head Coach (First year).I officially began my volleyball coaching career last year. I coached a middle school team and we had a successful (7-3) season. I was promoted to the junior varsity level this year and have enjoyed similar success. Though the team records reflect some success, I have enjoyed seeing improvement in these young girls who did not have much experience with competitive volleyball before this year more than any other aspect of this job. I have enjoyed teaching and instilling fundamentals which is critical at this level. I am also equally excited about coaching a varsity squad, for men or women, at some point in the future. I played competitive at Gilman School in Baltimore in high school and in college (intramural/ club level) where I was a player captain/ coach for my team. Show less

Middle School Baseball Coach
-
Feb 2012 - Present
This will be my fifth year coaching baseball as I did so for three years while I attended the University of Richmond. I have coached for two years at the junior varsity level and this year will be my third consecutive year coaching at the middle school level. I aim to coach at the varsity or even collegiate level in the future but very much enjoy the rewarding experience of teaching the fundamentals of baseball at the middle school level. Past Experience:I played baseball competitively, and practically on a year-round basis, at the highest amateur level in the state of Maryland (Metro Baseball) for eight years. I decided to turn down offers to play from multiple Division III programs in lieu of focusing on academic growth at University of Richmond. Show less

F.O.C.U.S stands for Fellowship of Christians in Universities and School. It is a national, not for profit youth ministry that offers youth programs directed towards mentoring private school students in both high schools and colleges. During the school year, each region has weekly meetings for specific schools as well as monthly meetings for all students of the region. During the summer and winter school vacations there are national programs offered on Martha's Vineyard and other various locations for the respective F.O.C.U.S regions. I have volunteered at the local level on a weekly basis with the Collegiate School branch of F.O.C.U.S in Richmond (where I am presently a teaching intern) for the last six years, and have also volunteered at the national programs during that time span. My duties include leading Bible studies and talks during F.O.C.U.S meetings, as well as leading the participating students in day trips and supervising them over the course of the programs. Show less
