• Handle the majority of monthly close journal entries, including identifying and correcting misclassifications. • Extensive use of Excel macros, pivot tables, and various functions such as index matching, vlookups, xlookups, etc. to improve the month close process and account analysis functions. This has reduced the overtime necessary during the month close process for myself and the controller, and has shortened the month close by 3 business days, from 13 to 10 days. • Direct and supervise the staff accountant in performing daily tasks such as journal entries, data entry, daily cash and other support functions for the accounting department. • Supervise and/or handle daily cash receipts ranging from $100,000 to $2,500,000 per day. • Perform account analysis in order to identify errors and find possible tax savings. Such as, correcting over $500,000 which had been classified as fixed assets but was then expensed after my review of the invoices. Identifying and correcting approximately $650,000 of meals & entertainment expenses which were incorrectly classified as 50% tax deductible when they were eligible for 100% deduction. Identifying approximately $50,000 of overpayments made for taxes to the City of Los Angeles prior to my hire due to an error in the calculation of the taxes due. • Perform bank reconciliations on the US, and Canadian bank accounts. • Review and approve payable invoices for correct dollar amount and account coding. • Maintain monthly accrual schedules for numerous accounts such as prepaid insurance, and prepaid expense accounts, and various additional account schedules. • Generate macros and improve spreadsheets for other departments such as human resources; created a macro which allows them to run it each month and have any differences between our accounting software and payroll system for employee pay highlighted so that errors can be corrected before actually running payroll. • As well as additional items which do not fit in the text limit.
