I was 1 of 2 UKESF scholars that were given the opportunity to work at Qualcomm in the hardware teams for 12 weeks. I was working in the System Validation & Emulation (SVE) team to test and validate images and platforms as provided by the design team before passing them onto the software team for higher level firmware development. The testing involved low level interaction with the hardware, modifying registers and memories at an address level to verify that a given platform behaves as specified by the platform specification. For one platform this specification had several evolutions while I was working in the team, so I was also tasked with modifying the tests significantly, sometimes writing them from scratch, to reflect the new behaviour when necessary. In addition to this, when test failures were recorded, I was also responsible for contacting the relevant point of contact and working with them to debug the test failure and identify if it is a design issue. This work is crucial to catch problems before the chip is put into production. Alongside this testing work, I was also working on and completed a number of convenience features for the team to make their work significantly easier and more effective, including improving the regression test recording system and seamlessly upgrading the whole codebase for one platform into a new language framework version without interrupting any of my colleagues. Intern - Embedded Software Engineer

Jun 2019 - Sep 2019
In the summer of 2019 I worked at Arm in the Intellectual Property Group - Open Source Software group as an Embedded Software Engineering for a summer internship. The job taught me a lot about working in a small focused team as part of a larger company, and I am glad of the opportunity to contribute to such an industry leading company. Among many other things it taught me vital skills related to Agile development and working on a large code base with many contributors, as well as more technical knowledge of the Arm architecture and how the software works on the hardware. One of my responsibilities was to introduce a new building system to the existing code base. The new system allows my team to concentrate on more pressing tasks, letting the build system handle the intricacies of building and deploying the firmware. This, however, was not my only task and in fact only took about a third of the time. When the build system had been adopted my new goal for the rest of the internship was to adapt the Trusted Firmware (TF) project developed by the OSS department onto my team's specific platform using a Virtual Model (FVP). This involved significant work to create platform specific code that would run on our platform. I learnt a lot about build systems and version control, and their importance in a large company even within a small team. I also greatly accelerated my knowledge of firmware (something I hadn't worked with before) and developed my debug skills significantly, as I utilised Arm's Development Studio a lot to debug my virtual model.
