Our teams conducted two 4-week projects wherein: (1) Our team designed improvement to SUT components in the biopharma industry. Using the Goldfire software suite to apply the Systematic Innovation process, as well as consultations with domain experts and customer representatives, we were able to identify and prioritize customer concerns, generate potential solutions, and refine these solutions into a list of detailed recommendations for Corning to improve its existing capabilities and to differentiate its products in present and future markets. (2) Our team developed models and MATLAB software to perform robust parameter estimation via simulation of multi-component ion-diffusion processes. We performed rigorous literature review and consulted with domain experts to propose and construct models of the system. In addition, we optimized the software such to achieve approximately 100x faster computation than currently available implementations. Show less

Our teams conducted two 4-week projects wherein: (1) Through investigation of state-of-the-art flame-speed measurement techniques, our team proposed and designed an apparatus for improved resolution and dynamic range of the measurement. (2) Our team investigated, designed, and simulated (ASPEN) the production of biopolymer precursors for wind turbine blades and performed a techno-economical analysis (considering costs, energy requirements, and greenhouse gas emissions) for comparison with extant petroleum-based precursors. (Roman Research Group) Conducted a research project on the catalytic upgrading of lignin bio oil. Designed and executed a series of experiments using various catalysts and model compounds to determine optimal reaction conditions. Analyzed products and catalysts using gas chromatograph (GC), mass spectrometer (MS), flame ion detector (FID), and powder X-Ray diffractometer (PXRD) instruments. Presented a poster on said research to colleagues and public visitors. (Roman Research Group) Conducted a research project on the catalytic upgrading of lignin bio oil. Conducted purity and compositional analysis of experimental and pilot plant polymer samples using gas and liquid chromatographs. Performed IZOD, tensile, and flexure tests to determine physical properties of polymer samples. Prepared and measured polymer samples to limit variability in test results. Executed an experiment to investigate sulfur corrosion in equipment and recommend solutions.
