I attended this conference sponsored by the RISE Program at the UPR. The conference was held in St. Louis, MO; I had the opportunity to present my summer research conducted at Harvard Medical School & the Children's Hospital in Boston under the mentorship of Dr. Elizabeth C. Engle. I attended this conference a second time during the year of 2012. It was held in San José, CA. I got the opportunity to do a poster presentation of the research I conducted at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine during the summer of 2012 under Dr. Beau Ances' mentorship. I worked in Dr. Elizabeth C. Engle's lab. "Characterize KIF21A expression in Glial cells" I worked at Dr. Elizabeth Engle's Neurodevelopemental Biology Lab over the summer. I also shadowed pediatric neurologist Dr. Peter B. Kang. During this summer research project we were trying to confirm whether there indeed is KIF21A expression in Glial cells, such as Astrocytes and Oligodendrocytes. Once we confirm this, we can further address the question about the role of glial cells before, during and after axon degeneration through embryonic development. http://www.childrenshospital.org/cfapps/research/data_admin/Site339/mainpageS339P0.html Elizabeth C. • Jun 2010 - Jul 2010

Summer Medical and Dental Educational Program (SMDEP) Through this experience I had the incredible opportunity to live the life of a medical student and broaden my knowledge of basic core sciences. I spent two months at Columbia Medical Center and performed different tasks that I was assigned. I volunteered to serve as an interpreter at a free clinic for disadvantaged Hispanic patients, which was awesome, since I was able to attain clinical experience and at the same time help my fellow neighbors from the Caribbean. I excelled in all my courses, especially in the subject of biology, and was selected as one of the highest achievers in the course. Students from all over the United States participated in this program, which gave me the opportunity of an enriching cultural experience. Show less

During Christmas break from school I tried to find a job. Being only 14, I could not be legally hired. I needed to think of something to sell in order to make money. I thought about something typical for the season, something different. I started baking rum cakes to sell door to door. Business flourished and I was soon seeing positive results. I currently still maintain my business and have expanded it by incorporating different flavors such as pistachio, amaretto, chocolate chip, chocolate, and lemon. I had never imagined that a Christmas break job would turn into something permanent. Show less
