My time with Craigs previously was a role that was quite 1 dimensional (as a printing.com designer). This time around I am involved in all aspects of the Pre Press department. This includes design/conceptualisation for offset, digital, online, apparel and large format, pitches, imposition, books and social media design. As well as the above, keeping to deadlines, liaising with sales reps, printers, production staff and clients are all in a days work. Sapient Nitro is one of London’s leading Direct Response agencies, which I worked for in the capacity as a Creative Artworker and stand in Studio Lead. The studio I worked in was a fast paced pressure cooker, and I believe my positivity, can-do attitude and sense of humour made me a great asset. The skill I have gained whilst working here are a very keen eye for detail and extremely high standards. I was able to work with and learn from an amazing team of excellent Art Directors and Copywriters to produce print and digital material that gave me much more experience in both mediums and an understanding of their respective production processes. My skills in Indesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and PowerPoint have increased massively as has the speed at which I can now work.

At Craig’s Design and Print I worked in the per-press department as the printing.com designer. This role involves working in close relation to clients, sales rep’s and head office to ensure continuity in all aspects of my work. Printing.com is an international franchise that prides itself on fast turn around, high quality, low cost products. For this reason there are many regulations and guidelines in a normal working day that I had to know and adhere to. My role involved designing a vast amount of various work on a deadline, and due to this I learnt to quickly and succinctly take the concepts in my mind and translate them onto a digital platform. I feel this has made me a better designer as I have had to learn how to generate quality ideas at a much faster rate than I was originally used to. I feel that my experience at Craig’s Design and Print taught me to think on my feet at a much quicker rate, I have gained a better understanding of dealing with people from vastly different areas of the industry and because I deal with customers much more, I feel confident now that I have the ability to talk with and understand people ideas much more effectively than previously.

I completed a three year apprenticeship in Graphic Communication with McDowall Print. During that time I attended two block courses, completed several correspondence papers and four portfolios of work that were assessed and passed by Print NZ. Whilst completing study in my own time, I worked full time for McDowall Print. Through that experience I worked on a range of commercial projects such as business stationary, brochures, labels, posters and much more. During a normal day at work I would deal with new design briefs, amendments to proofs, deal with foreign languages, cleaning and maintaining pre-press machinery, consulting with clients and dealing with any day to day issues that would arise. In my second year at McDowall Print, due to staffing changes, I became head of the art room. This involved all of the above duties but also included scheduling for jobs, more hands on dealing with the printers and sales reps, proofing jobs for clients, training of other staff, having to figure out technical and design problems myself and also having sole responsibility of any errors that should happen because to the art room.
