This placement, turned volunteering, with Douglas MacMillan Hospice involves working with bereaved clients, one on one as their counsellor. Working in a person-centred way, the focus is on helping the client come to a safe place with their grief, where they feel ready to manage on their own. This is done by supporting the client, giving them a safe, open place for them to explore their relationships, feelings and situation, whilst maintaining awareness of risk factors. Working with clients ranging from 19-92, and both male and female has given a wealth of experience. Whilst it is a bereavement service, working with clients on a variety of different issues is not unusual, from family relationships, past trauma and childhood issues and each client can have a different emotional response to their grief, from sadness, to anger or guilt, and more. As part of this role, it has been necessary to book subsequent sessions with clients, and maintain my own schedule. Also keeping accurate, confidential notes, which are kept securely and privately. I have also helped facilitate peer support groups. Show less
