In a team of three, we develop Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) based sample management solutions for the research field of in-situ electron microscopy. My responsibility entails the ‘Nano-Reactor’. This MEMS device is the core technology in our ‘Climate’ product line; a world-leading gas-heating system for in-situ electron microscopy. My main activities are:• Characterization and design optimization of the MEMS-based Nano-Reactor• Metrology at the microscopic, mesoscopic, and macroscopic scale • Finite element modelling of electro-thermo-mechanical behaviour in MEMS devices• Defining and determining technical specifications• Collaboration with research partners• Providing information and documentation to other departmentsWhile the MEMS is the core of the technology, its functionality can only be fully exploited using peripheral equipment. Therefore, I acquired expertise on the complete system. From here my role gradually grew towards becoming the lead engineer on our Climate product line, involving many additional tasks and responsibilities which include but are not limited to:• Collaboration with suppliers on continuous development of hardware such as the gas supply system and residual gas analyser while considering financial aspects• Proof of concept and prototype development of the first liquid system with flow control which matured into the ‘Stream’ product line• Creating quality control procedures, system manuals and video instructions• Quality control on newly developed systems• Worldwide on-site system installations, demonstrations, and user training• Remote service, field service and customer supportAside of my role in the R&D department, I manage the company’s IT infrastructure and most of its software packages.
