      Job Description Instrumental Music Department Head 4-12 Responsible To: Director of Secondary Education General Description: The Instrumental Music Department Head provides district leadership, coordination, and advocacy in the area of instrumental music. Responsibilities in addition to classroom teaching duties: 1. Coordinates district recruiting and displays activities for elementary band/orchestra with staff and music stores. 2. Represents the department with various groups including parents, vendors (music stores, etc.), the music MEP facilitator, and administrative staff. 3. Coordinates the instrumental music budget process with the Director of Secondary Education or designee and departmental representatives. 4. Coordinates Instrumental music repair, replacement of equipment, and piano tuning. 5. Assists principals to schedule traveling teachers at various sites. 6. Coordinates district instrumental music inventories. 7. Provides input to Human Resources in regard to selection of instrumental music teachers. 8. Assists instrumental music teachers in the budgeting process as needed. 9. Coordinates instrumental music rental program. 10. Collaborates with the MEP Music facilitator in monitoring, developing, and assessing the curriculum. 11. Works with the MEP facilitator and Director of Staff Development to plan for inservice needs of the department as needed. 12. Provides support to instrumental music teachers. 13. The district may provide one period of release time from classroom teaching duties for the performance of department head duties. 14. Other responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications: 1. Masters Degree or evidence of satisfactory progress toward its attainment 2. Instrumental music teaching experience 3. Evidence of leadership responsibilities preferred 4. Ability to work cooperatively with department members and administrative staff. 5. Communicates effectively.
